On the road... again
July 23, 2019, Stowe, VT — I confess, I am a member of the Ukululus: Ukaholics Unanimous, shown here uking it up on the common in the middle of Stowe, Vermont, for about 100 enthusiastic sing-along-ers.
How do Ukululus happen, you ask? In Summer 2014, our two founding members were at a local talent show on Peak’s Island in Maine when the final act came on stage — 25 people with ukuleles. They played. They sang. Our founders turned to one another and said, ‘We can do that!’ They bought ukuleles and started teaching themselves to play. They had such fun, they asked a few friends to join them — and the Ukululus were born.
Fortunately, one is a retired music teacher, another is a retired church musician, five sing in the auditioned chamber chorus Cantemus on Boston’s North Shore, and two are yoga instructors who teach the group how to breathe and keep calm. Our usual sing-along venues are senior centers, nursing homes, assisted living, retirement communities — and the occasional summer Gazebo Concert in Stowe, VT. I hope you’ve noticed that our font size is larger than Judy Collins’.
We donate our proceeds to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization, in memory of one of our members.
