I’d wanted to go to Portugal ever since I first went to Spain, in 2006. Could have used more than 6 hours there!
My Viking bible calls Porto ‘the city built on port’ and we did squeeze in a tasting — at 10:30 in the a.m. But, hey, when in Porto...
We did a combo bus + walking tour since the ship was berthed a ways out of town. When we arrived in the city center, I was totally charmed by the classic architecture — churches swathed in tiles (the tiles help keep out the winter humidity)...
More tiles...with Delft influence.
When there aren’t tiles, granite gewgaws suffice.
The entire historic center of Porto, including this Ribeira waterfront area, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Ribeira has wonderful, colorful alleys...
From the port distillery, we had a great view back across the Douro River to the Ribeira.
Next stop... last stop... Greenwich. #
