Greenwich — My last ‘Port of Call’ post
Greenwich, England, May 4 — I could have gone on a Viking excursion to the Tower of London or a jaunt out to Windsor Castle or trekked all the way to Canterbury Cathedral — not to mention the opportunity to ‘immerse [my]self in East London’s Famed Food Haven’ at the Billingsgate Fish Market.
Instead, I opted to remain in Greenwich with two of my dearest people, my Cuz Laurie and my cuz-in-law Patricia, who drove up from Kent for a walkabout and lunch at the Trafalgar Tavern near the old Naval College grounds. Saw the outside of a royal house, the roof of the Observatory, the entrance to the Painted Hall, lots of gorgeous Georgian buildings on a gorgeous bright sunny spring day.
I called this ‘My last Port of Call post’ because the next place I hit terra firma will be Boston. I plan to work on one or two wrap-ups on the flight, with a few extraneous pictures and any other bons mots that occur to me. But they won’t fly until I hit the WiFi at Logan... more likely, the WiFi on my bus up to Newburyport.
Stay tuned... for just a little longer!
‘You push the thingie on the side to take the picture.’
The fountain was supposed to be in the picture. Oh well...
A marquee near the pier where the luggage-finding free-for-all began.
There were only three of us on the Purple 1 bus (our luggage sorting designation) to Heathrow and our cheerful driver took a circuitous route to show us some sights...
London Bridge, which I had walked across last July.
The London Eye...
You might not recognize this: The Houses of Parliament are cocooned in scaffolding. The Big Ben bell (the bell is Big Ben, not the clock) has been silenced during the renovation to protect the workers’ hearing. #
